Health & Healing
A ministry of health and healing has been at the heart and soul of the people of God and at the center of the church’s mission for centuries. As Christ’s disciples today, we continue this mission of making a difference in the world by fulfilling Christ’s call “to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal” (Luke 9:2). We also embrace the importance of wellness and a holistic relationship with God that encompasses body, mind, and spirit.

Through visitation ministry, we reach out to bring our faith community to our sisters and brothers in Christ who are unable to come to us. These homebound members of the Body of Christ continue to grow in faith and remain connected to the community through visits by other members of the Body. If you or someone you know is in need of a visit, please contact Pastor Lowell Halvorson or Geri Long, RN, Parish Nurse.
Deacons are members of the congregation who bring Holy Communion to those who are homebound. If you would like to serve as a deacon, or if you or someone you know would like to be visited by a deacon, please contact Geri Long, RN, Parish Nurse.
“Just Because” Basket Ministry
This ministry provides support and encouragement for people going through difficult or significant times in their lives. First Lutheran volunteers assemble and deliver baskets for these individuals each Monday. The baskets include a note of support and various food items, such as soup, bread, muffins, juice, fruit, etc. If you know of someone who could use a “Just Because” basket, or to become involved in preparing baskets, please contact Geri Long, RN, Parish Nurse.
The First Lutheran community is actively engaged in supporting one another through prayer in the following ways:
- Providing sanctuary and chapel space for personal reflection and meditation, regularly available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Providing resources for personal devotions and prayer:
- God Pause daily devotion from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN
- HomeWord daily devotional from the HomeWord Center for Youth and Family
- Prayer Center of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for additional prayer resources
Prayer Shawl Ministry
The mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at First Lutheran is to wrap those in need of God’s love in the warm embrace of a shawl created with prayers for rest, renewal, recovery and happiness. Our Prayer Shawl Ministry needs the help of all who knit, crochet or want to learn these crafts. A group of faithful knitters and crocheters meets monthly during the winter to knit and crochet prayer shawls and to share ideas and patterns. You are invited to join the fellowship or knit/crochet on your own. Any shawls you make can be placed in the designated basket in the church office. We also have yarn and instructions available. All completed prayer shawls are displayed on the Prayer Shawl rack in the lounge at First Lutheran. If you know someone who should receive a prayer shawl, please select a shawl for that person and complete a request form found in the side pocket of the Prayer shawl rack.
