A Special Message from Sarah Miller to First Lutheran

Dear friends of First Lutheran,

As another summer rolls along I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on where I am at, what I have been doing, and what is next for me.  I just got back from a week at Luther Seminary during which I took a class on Preaching and Liturgy in Life Transitions.  It was a busy week but life-giving as well.  I had the chance to see and visit with students of my cohort, many of whom I hadn't seen in a year.

This past year, I have been serving as the intern pastor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie, WI.  I was warmly and graciously received there last August and I immediately felt at home.  I have enjoyed getting to know the community of Menomonie and the people of Our Savior's in particular.

During this year I have had the opportunity to experience many aspects of the congregation's ministry.  I have helped to plan and lead worship (always a favorite thing to do!), visited with congregational members who are home-bound or in the hospital, learned about the administrative roles of the pastor (lots of meetings!), taught confirmation and helped to lead adult education classes, and participated in the congregation's many ministries.

Besides gaining more experience at these tasks, my sense of call to pastoral ministry has also deepened.  A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to share my story with a women's Bible study group at Our Savior's, and I want to share with you a part of what I told them.  Lutherans understand the Word in three ways.  First and foremost the Word is Jesus Christ.  Secondly, the Word is the proclaimed Word.  Thirdly, the Word is the written Word - scripture.  Long before I began seminary I knew I had a deep love for both Jesus and scripture.  But what has led me to where I am today is the discovery that I also have a deep love and passion for the proclaimed word.  I first discovered this passion in your midst, as a member of First Lutheran.  And many of you were among the first to support and encourage me to consider seminary.  Thank you for nurturing me in this way!  During this past year on internship I have had the opportunity to both grow in my own love of the Word (all three understandings!) and to share this love with others - what a blessing.

August will bring a close to my internship.  I then have another year of classes to complete before graduation in May of 2016.  During this final year of seminary I will be staying at Our Savior's in Menomonie, working about half-time as a pastoral assistant.  I am very excited about this opportunity to continue in ministry there.  Post-graduation I will be seeking a call to a congregation as an ordained pastor.

In addition to giving you an update on this past year, I also wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you for all of your prayers and for your support of me during my journey through seminary.  You have been a blessing to me - thank you!

In Christ,

Sarah Miller
