God's Work, Our Hands - FLC Women's Ministry

by Bonnie Thalacker and Pastor Amy Odgren

As we continue to recognize those who share their gifts and talents for the ongoing mission and ministry of First Lutheran Church, we focus on our Women's Ministries this week.  Our women's groups are varied, but most of the action is lived out under the same purpose:  "As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, society, and the world."

First Lutheran's Women's Ministry is open to all the women of First Lutheran, and we would like to invite you to our studies and events.  Some of the annual programs that we hold are:

  •  Mug and Muffin meeting in January
  • This year we had an instructor lead us in Laughter Yoga, which was a lot of fun!
  • Our Mother - Daughter Banquet
  • Christmas Banquet

We also sponsor other fun events throughout the year that bring the women of First together for fellowship and service.  Currently, there are five Circles who meet on a consistent basis.  Meeting at various times of the day and differing days of the week, they often follow the Women of the ELCA Bible Studies.  There is also a group of young women who meet on Wednesday nights and follow "Bold Café," a study resource that integrates how our Lutheran Christian faith informs contemporary issues.  In addition, a group of women called "Ladies to the Aid" have developed ways to intersect fellowship with service both to our faith community and in our wider community.

February 23 is named as Bold Women's Sunday - where we and many of our Lutheran partners will celebrate all Lutheran women who have acted or are acting boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ.  There are two conventions coming up that present great chances to learn about the activities of women in the ELCA.  May 2-3 is the Synod's Women's Convention here in Eau Claire, and July 24-27 is the Triennial Women's Gathering in Charlotte, NC, where thousands of women of all ages will gather under the theme "Of Many Generations."

The women of this congregation have shared their faith and their passion for service, reaching out in Christ's name for many, many years. We give thanks for their faithful witness and action.  If you would like more information on the women's ministries of First Lutheran Church, please contact our church office or Bonnie Thalacker, president of the women's ministry.  Please join us as we move boldly together!
