Beacon House (Interfaith Hospitality Network)

outreach local interfaith hospitality network

First Lutheran has supported this important ministry since its inception in Eau Claire in March, 1994. Beacon House is a homeless shelter for families, women, and children. We provide volunteers for this homelike facility so that the homeless have ’gap housing’ while they seek employment and more-permanent housing. First Lutheran serves four ‘weeks of engagement' for this ministry throughout the year. Volunteers provide food, kitchen supplies, serving assistance and stay overnight at Beacon House.

For more information or to get involved in serving at Beacon House, please contact Robbie Joern, Coordinator of Mission and Outreach.

Feed My People Food Bank

outreach local feed my people food bankFirst Lutheran was instrumental in starting Feed My People Food Bank, which provides food to 14 counties throughout the Chippewa Valley and beyond. We continue to support Feed My People by participating in packing kid’s meals four times a year, and by serving as volunteer drivers. We are also involved in one of Feed My People’s largest fundraisers, the Empty Bowls event, each March.

Chippewa Valley Free Clinic

outreach local blanket ministry
The Chippewa Valley Free Clinic offers basic health care to those in our community who could not otherwise afford it. First Lutheran supports this ministry financially and by providing blankets for clients and monthly meals for caregivers. We tie fleece blankets throughout the year which are distributed at the Free Clinic with fleece that is funded by a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. We also prepare and deliver meals for the doctors and nurses who volunteer at the Free Clinic every third Tuesday of the month.

Sojourner House

Sojourner House is a new homeless shelter in Eau Claire designed to address the needs of homeless adult men and women in the Chippewa Valley. Sojourner House offers a safe night’s lodging, an evening snack, a nutritious breakfast, showers, and an opportunity to complete laundry every week. Guests can stay for 90 days, but will have the opportunity to ‘earn’ extra nights with offering to clean, shovel/sweep walks and other needed tasks. First Lutheran played a major role in the The Homeless Shelter Coalition led by the Catholic Charities of the LaCrosse Diocese to develop Sojourner House. We continue to support this ministry financially and through volunteers.

Community Conversations

“Community Conversations” is an outreach ministry of First Lutheran which was initiated to provide a public forum for faith-based current issues. This series offers factual content on relevant topics in our culture by elliciting knowledgeable forum speakers and providing time for participant questions and other interactions. Community Conversations thus far have included: “Understanding Islam”, “Egypt: The Mid-east Gamechanger”, and “Together We Can Change: A Community Conversation on Bullying Awareness”. We continue to seek more opportunities to engage the community in meaningful and relevant conversations.

For more information or to share an idea for Community Conversations, please contact Robbie Joern, Coordinator of Mission and Outreach.
